Welcome to The 5 Spot

Brian and Jennifer Huskey, owners of The Gaslight Group

Meet Brian and Jennifer Huskey, owners of The Gaslight Group.

Brian got started in the food ‘biz’ working concessions at the University of Tennessee athletic games while he was earning his bachelor of science degree in Human Ecology. After school he spent years honing his hospitality skills at iconic establishments like Steak and Ale, The Butcher Shop Steakhouse, Ruby Tuesday & finally as the Director of Operations for Stokely Hospitality Enterprises, owners of The Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant and The Applewood Farmhouse Grill and LeConte Lodge in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

In 2006, he quit his job, they took their son out of school, and they took a giant leap of faith. They moved from their home in East Tennessee to Savannah, Georgia with not much more than a nickel to their names. They took out a few ridiculous loans and bought what was then known as b. Matthew’s Bakery.  They slowly transformed it into what is now their flagship business, and one of Savannah’s most popular restaurants, b. Matthew’s Eatery.

They have opened another seven (almost 8!) restaurants and bars over the next seventeen years. Some have failed but most have flourished.

  • In 2008, Blowin’ Smoke Southern Cantina opened, a mash up between a Southern BBQ shack, taco truck, & a lively South-of-the-border cantina.
  • Abe’s on Lincoln, the quintessential local dive bar, was added in 2010 to the exploding Downtown Savannah scene.
  • Their first foray into one of Savannah’s many charming neighborhoods was Blue Turtle Bistro in 2011.
  • Soon after, also in 2012 The 5 Spot concept as a neighborhood space in Habersham Village. The 5 Spot Midtown serves lunch, dinner, a weekend brunch and a sought-after happy hour in Midtown Savannah.
  • In late 2017 they opened a new concept called East End Provisions in an old fire station at 420 E Broughton St in Downtown Savannah.
  • In 2019 the Gaslight Group converted East End into a second The 5 Spot location called The 5 Spot Broughton.
  • 2021 brought The 5 Spot Sandfly. It sits in the heart of the Isle of Hope Community.
  • As 2023 comes to a close, the team is working to open their latest member of the Gaslight Group, The 5 Spot Richmond Hill.

Brian said of their success, “Man does it feel good when they succeed and become part of the community. We’re opening our ninth restaurant next month and I’m still learning things I didn’t know.  That’s what I love about this business.

I was recently asked if I would do it all again.  Absolutely!”
